They were originally designed as replacements for the GP-412 Mk II stylus, making them slightly more compliant than the original 946/D66. The recommended tracking force of the original was 0.75g - 1.5g.

The Philips GP-401 mk II was the lowest ranking elliptical member of the second generation SUPER-M cartridge series from Philips. Only the tip of the accompanying 946/D66 stylus differentiated it from the spherical GP-400 mk II and allowed it to track a bit better.
The GP-401 mk II is compatible with all styli for other members of the SUPER-M mk II series, including the original GP-400 mk II and GP-412 mk II cartridges, but also the later GP-406 mk II and GP-422 mk II as well as GP-500 mk II and GP-501 mk II. Styli from the first generations can also be used to good effect, but the cosmetics of the physical fit are not perfect.
