Some time after the original Philips SUPER-M cartridge series was launched Philips introduced the GP-422 as the new top of the range. The cartridge was meant for 4-channel playback, which required tracking capabilities beyond those offered by the GP-412. In order to achieve the required 45khz frequency extension the elliptical tip of the GP-412 was replaced by a Super Sonic Tracking (SST) tip - not quite Shibata, but close.

946/D68 Stylus for Philips GP-422

The tip of the original 946/D68 stylus was special. As originals are no longer available and the SST shape is out of fashion, we recommend a Shibata based replacement as the nearest match to the original.

Upgrade Stylus for Philips GP-422

The original 946/D68 stylus set a high standard, but many agree that the JICO SAS on Boron offered below not only matches but exceeds it. This state-of-the-art stylus features a finely balanced suspension, a lightweight yet rigid boron cantilever, and a SAS fine-line profile for exceptional tracking and detail. Recommended tracking force is 1.0–1.5?g, with 1.25?g as the optimum.

Note that the Philips GP-422 is stylus compatible with all other members of the original SUPER-M cartridge family as well as the SUPER-M mk II family. Although it is technically a step down the ladder, very good result can be obtained with the elliptical replacements for, e.g., the GP-412.
