The Philips GP-401 was the entry-level elliptical model in the SUPER-M high-strength magnet cartridge series. It came with the 946/D59 stylus, featuring an elliptical tip like the higher-end GP-412, but shared its suspension with the more basic, spherical GP-400. This gave the GP-401 better tracking than the GP-400, though not quite on par with the GP-412. All models in the series shared the same cartridge body, allowing stylus interchangeability across the range.

The original elliptical styli tracked at 1,75g to 3g, but are unfortunately no longer available. As alternatives, we offer high-quality elliptical replacements from Analogis, Tonar, and JICO — all delivering excellent performance. Notably, the Analogis Black Diamond features a nude elliptical tip, while both the Tonar and JICO models use bonded tips.

Mono Stylus for Philips GP-401

The Philips GP-401 can be used for 78 RPM mono records, provided it is fitted with a wide-diameter spherical mono stylus. The Tonar 511-DN aftermarket stylus offered below is well-suited for this purpose and delivers reliable performance on vintage shellac records.

Upgrade Stylus for Philips GP-401

Since all cartridges in the SUPER-M family share the same body, the most straightforward upgrade for the GP-401 is to mount a stylus originally designed for the GP-412 or GP-422. For even greater performance, consider the JICO SAS on Boron fine-line aftermarket stylus offered below — an upgrade that surpasses anything Philips ever produced. Recommended tracking force is 1,0g to 1,5g, with 1,25g as the optimal setting. The Shibata stylus is also an excellent alternative, delivering impressive performance at a more accessible price point.
