When the Philips SUPER-M stylus series was first launched the Philips GP-412 was top of the range. Like the GP-401 it sported an elliptical stylus tip but on the GP-412 it was polished. Furthermore, the suspension and cantilever of the mounted 946/D58 stylus was optimized for superior tracking - the moving mass mass lower and the suspension was more compliant.

946/D58 Stylus for Philips GP-412

The original 946/D58 was very compliant. As a consequence the recommended tracking force was 0.75g - 1.5g, i.e. only half of the recommendation for the GP-400 and GP-401. In the absence of originals we recommend the below replacements that track at the same force as the originals.

Upgrade Stylus for Philips GP-412

The most obvious upgrade path for the GP-412 is to simply mount a stylus recommended for the GP-422 big brother. If you want to go beyond this option in quality, you must use the JICO SAS on Boron offered below. It combines a well-balanced suspension with a stiff light boron cantilever and a fine-line stylus profile. The specified tracking force is 1g - 1.5g with 1.25g as the recommended optimum. If your budget is limited, the Shibata is a sound alternative.

The Philips SUPER-M cartridges all use the same generator. Styli can therefore be exchanged freely between them. This includes the Philips GP-500, GP-413, and GP-421 that were later added to the series. Styli from the SUPER-M mk II series can also be used.
