When launched the Ortofon VMS-20 family was Ortofon's top Moving Magnet (MM) design. Specifically, it was the best yet instance of the Variable Magnetic Shunt (VMS) principle that Ortofon used in the MM designs. It came in spherical and elliptical variants that differed only in the mounted styli.

Elliptical D-20E Stylus for Ortofon VMS-20E mk I/II

The elliptical Ortofon D-20E stylus was also black and worked best at low tracking force. Originals are not available, but both of the replacements offered below are black and track between the 0.75g and 1.5g originally specified by Ortofon.

The cartridges of the Ortofon VMS families, i.e. F, FF, VMS, M, all used the same generator. However, the contemporary Ortofon styli all carry a shaped spigot that will only slide into the cartridge body intended for the particular stylus. The VMS-20 series used the same spigot shape for both mk I and mk II, and it is also compatible with the Ortofon VMS-10 mk II, VMS-30 mk II, F15 mk I, FF-15 mk I, M-20 (not super), and M-15 Super families of cartridges.
