The Philips GP-401 was the lowest ranking elliptical member of the Philips SUPER-M high strength magnet family of cartridges. The accompanying stylus was the 946/D59. The cut of the tip was elliptical like that of the GP-412 big brother, but the suspension was identical to that of the spherical GP-400 entry level cartridge. This resulted in a cartridge that tracked better than the GP-400, but not as well as the GP-412, although the body is the same for all of them.

946/D59 Stylus for Philips GP-401

The original elliptical styli tracked at 1.75g - 3g. Unfortunately they are no longer available. Instead we offer excellent elliptical replacements from Analogis, Tonar, and JICO that both provide very good quality. Note that the Analogis Black Diamond is mounted with a nude elliptical tip where the Tonar and JICO both have bonded tips.

Mono Stylus for Philips GP-401

The Philips GP-401 can be used for 78RPM mono records, but a wide diameter spherical mono stylus must be mounted. The Tonar 511-DN aftermarket stylus offered below will do well in this capacity.

Upgrade Stylus for Philips GP-401

Since the cartridge body is shared throughout the SUPER-M family, the most obvious upgrade path for the GP-401 is to simply mount one of the styli meant for the GP-412 or GP-422. Alternatively, you can use the JICO SAS on Boron fine-line aftermarket stylus offered below to upgrade the cartridge beyond anything ever offered by Philips. The specified tracking force is 1g - 1.5g with 1.25g as the recommended optimum. The Shibata will also give you very respectable performance at a lower price point.
